Job Description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks an energetic, digitally savvy journalist to craft high-impact audio content around major breaking news, sports and other stories. Reporting to the executive producer of digital audio and radio, you will work with AP teams in the U.S. and worldwide to produce audio, leveraging existing reporting and contributing ideas to generate other audio content. We're looking for someone who will focus on newscast production, working two or more days per week from our Washington, D.C., office. This is a staff position covered by AP's agreement with the News Media Guild.

Responsibilities: In this role, you must be able to write, edit and voice stories and scripts. As a news agency, The Associated Press does not have a live broadcast audience or product, but supplies pre-recorded news bulletins, voiced reports and audio clips to U.S. radio stations and other media. You will select stories for inclusion in pre-recorded bulletins, and you'll select and edit newsworthy actualities for the AP audio cuts service. You also will conduct interviews and voice reports in the studio. This role is newsroom-based and is not primarily intended to be a field position.

We're looking for someone with a passion for news and audio storytelling who will:
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that meet the needs of digital audiences.
  • be a self-starter who can drive coverage in a deadline-driven, fast-paced newsroom.
  • demonstrate excellent audio editing skills and technical knowledge to help troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • occasionally navigate video to find content suitable for the audio/radio report.
  • have a professional voice and on-air delivery, combining authoritative sound with a conversational tone.
  • communicate and collaborate with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines, using strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.
  • be able to work all shifts as the news demands - including at night and on weekends - as AP is a 24/7 operation.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three to five years of experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate is creative and persistent. You must be able to write and tell a good story, working with colleagues around the world to get the best report for audio. You should understand the news industry and have knowledge of innovation in storytelling and consumption around audio.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

This position is covered by The Associated Press' contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate's skills, qualifications and market location.

The Associated Press offers comprehensive benefits which include:

  • Competitive medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Retirement benefits
  • Company paid life insurance
  • Paid vacation and sick days
  • Paid parental leave for any new parent
  • Mental health resources

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

Application deadline is January 10, 2025 at 11:59am EST.

AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. We support all aspects of diversity and provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, status as a veteran, or other characteristic protected by law. We encourage members of historically underrepresented communities, including women and BIPOC, to apply. Associated Press
